We work hard to gather compensation data for all positions. Gathering data for certain positions is easier for some (senior pastors) than for others (custodians). If data for a position in your church is not available, you can share your data and take our National Church Compensation Survey.
Or we recommend that for:
MINISTRY POSITIONS:
Consult ChurchSalary's expanded job description article and find the closest match and (if necessary) combine data from several positions.
'SECULAR' POSITIONS:
Gather and utilize free salary data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) for your metropolitan statistical area (MSA).
Churches are increasingly hiring staff to do jobs that also exist in the 'secular' or non-church marketplace (i.e., IT support, human resources, facility management, event planning, audio-visual technicians, website development/management, etc.). ChurchSalary doesn't gather data on all these positions because it is regularly reported to the federal government and published through the BLS.
Thankfully, this 'secular' salary data is easy to access if you follow the steps below.
Look up your church's address on this website.
Write down the "MSA/MD Name."
Download this XLS (Excel) file.
Use the BLS Occupation Finder to locate the job(s) that best suit the necessary employees at your church.
Open the Excel file and find your MSA using the search function.
Scroll through the list of jobs for your MSA and locate the occupations you identified in step 4.
Create a salary range, like the one found in your ChurchSalary reports, using the 25th (first quartile), 50th (median), and 75th (third quartile) numbers in the spreadsheet.
To find more data, visit the BLS website and navigate to the appropriate MSA-level page.
